Meet-the-Speaker | Experience-dependent plasticity in the brainstem + career talk

June 9, 2020 | 16:00 CET | ZOOM ID: 7754910236

Hosted by Fabian Heim (A06 Postdoc)

Fabian: As a birdsong neuroscientist it was great to get the opportunity and meet Catherine Carr in a more personal setting during the Meet the Speaker session right after her talk. With her groundbreaking experiments on sound localisation in barn owls she clearly contributed basic knowledge to the field of auditory neuroscience.

During the session she was very open to all sorts of questions be they personal or scientific. Even though the number of participants wasn’t too high, Catherine was very motivated to interact with young researchers and get an insight into our motivations and ideas. Patiently she took a lot of time until all of our questions were answered and contributed to the discussion by asking plenty of questions herself about our own projects, their progress as well as the underlying hypotheses and the experimental design. She thus provided ample feedback and additional ideas based on her own experience and I am sure that I wasn’t the only one who benefited from her input for my future scientific and personal development. I really appreciate the Meet the Speaker sessions because they allow for a more direct interaction with often seemingly unapproachable speakers and open up the space to ask and discuss all sorts of questions even though they are not directly linked to the topic of the previous talk.
