Kicking off the SFB's 3rd funding period in June 2026, Speaker Matthew Larkum announced new directions and upcoming project events at the annual mid-year business meeting at BCCN. Many thanks were given to Steering Committee (SC) members Daniela Vallentin (2018-2026), as well as to Livia de Hoz and Johannes Vierock (2022-2026) for their long service. The next funding period's 8-member SC welcomes newly elected A06 co-PI Hanna Zwaka.

As the semester winds down, we wish you all a restful break. We look forward to introducing new project members in our next newsletter, along with news of regular lecture and event formats, and new project collaborations in phase 3.

The Schram Foundation offers up to three research fellowships for basic neuroscience research.
|
|
Target: early-career researchers in Germany who are independently pursuing innovative projects, with a preference for studies on molecular and cellular aspects of the nervous system.

Eligibility: applicants with own position secured.
|
Funding: up to €120,000 per year for a maximum of 3 years (personnel, equipment, consumables, travel, and other research expenses)

From lab to real world: multiscale neural dynamics of human memory in motion
|
This MoBi 2026, public keynote lecture is hosted by Klaus Gramman (TU Berlin), SFB-associated PI (subprojects B05, C02), Chair of the MoBi conference 2026.
|
Understanding how the brain supports memory in natural environments requires moving beyond stationary laboratory paradigms. In this talk, I will present a multiscale framework combining intracranial recordings, high-density scalp EEG, and wearable sensors to study memory during real-world and virtual navigation in freely moving individuals. I will highlight how medial temporal lobe dynamics, particularly theta activity, are modulated by behavior and context during continuous movement. By linking invasive and non-invasive recordings, we propose a scalable approach to reconstruct deep-brain memory signals across larger populations. These findings bridge laboratory and real-world neuroscience and provide a foundation for developing responsive neurostimulation therapies for neurological and psychiatric disorders.
