Reconciling Spatial Representations in the Hippocampus with Episodic Memory
February 4, 2025 4:00 pm CET | BCCN Lecture Hall Philippstraße 13/Haus 6 | ZOOM ID: 7754910236
A fundamental question in neuroscience is why the hippocampus, critical for episodic memory in humans, primarily exhibits spatial representations like place cells in many species. This talk proposes that spatial coding emerges naturally when episodic memory systems are engaged in navigation tasks. We demonstrate this using a novel computational model based on memory-augmented neural networks. [...] Read more >>
Neural mechanisms for emotional memory processing during sleep
Feb 11, 2025 4:00 pm CET | ZOOM ID: 7754910236
The gradual reinforcement of memories, called “consolidation”, is a process occurring partially during sleep and mediated by various patterns of coordinated neural activity. The formation of contextualized emotional memories involves a large network of structures, among which the hippocampus and the baso-lateral amygdala (BLA) are central. In the dorsal hippocampus, fast oscillations (sharp-wave ripples) during non-REM sleep mediate the consolidation [...] Read more >>

Dendritic modulation balances stability and plasticity

February 25, 2025 4:00 pm CET | Paul-Ehrlich-Hörsaal Virchowweg 4 10117 Berlin | ZOOM ID: 7754910236
To thrive in continuously evolving environments, animals need to assimilate new sensory information while maintaining stable representations for previously acquired information. This interplay between plasticity and stability lies at the core of lifelong learning, although its underlying neural mechanisms remain poorly understood. I propose that biological learners primarily attempt to modulate neural activities when facing new challenges, through the activation of context-specific, top-down afferents targeting distal dendritic compartments (stability). Kino für Schulen: Still Alice mit anschließender Fragerunde

GEM 2025 - Generative Episodic Memory

June 2 - 4, 2025 | Ruhr University Bochum | Universitätsstraße 150, 44801 Bochum
https://journals.aps.org/prx/abstract/10.1103/PhysRevX.14.041047
Episodic memories are widely regarded as memories of personally experienced events. Early concepts about episodic memory were based on the storage model, according to which experiential content is preserved in memory and later retrieved. However, overwhelming empirical evidence suggests that the content of episodic memory is – at least to a certain degree – constructed in the act of remembering. [...] Read more here >>
